Causes of Cavities and Other Form of Childhood Dental Decay

In some cases, heredity may play a role in how vulnerable a child is to developing cavities. Baby bottle tooth decay is also common. Baby bottle tooth decay is caused by exposure to sugary liquids and is characterized by distinctively shaped decay in the front teeth. Should your child experience baby bottle tooth decay, cavities, or other forms of decay, our practice serving Teaneck, New Jersey and Flushing, Queens, and Bronx, New York, provides tooth colored fillings, dental crowns, and a full range of other treatments to restore dental health and aesthetics.

When left untreated, cavities and other forms of tooth decay can cause more serious dental problems for your child, including an infection of the tooth root, permanent deterioration, or tooth loss. This is why regular cleanings dental visits are so important; some forms of tooth decay are typically only caught early by a trained dental professional.

How Can Childhood Tooth Decay Be Prevented

Childhood dental decay can be prevented with a good balanced diet, regular brushing and flossing, and consistent visits with an experienced pediatric dentist. Parents should also be aware of the dangers associated with sugary drinks and their ability to cause baby bottle tooth decay.

To encourage ongoing dental health, your child should avoid consuming foods high in sugar content. The longer sugar stays on your child's teeth, the greater the chances of decay; therefore, special precautions should also be taken when it comes to sticky foods. Healthy snacks include white milk, fresh fruits, raw vegetables, whole grain enriched cereals, and dark breads. Gums and candies that are sugar free are also considered safe for a child's teeth. In fact, for children old enough to chew gum, sugarless gum helps prevent tooth decay. Gum helps increase the production of saliva, which then acts to protect the teeth from decay. The most effective means of preventing cavities, however, is the brushing and flossing of a child's teeth twice a day. For infants, we recommend that a small piece of gauze be used to wipe away plaque from the teeth.

Fluoride also helps to strengthen teeth and protect against cavities. Fluoride is added to many municipal water systems and, if your child is especially susceptible to cavities, is also available in high concentration fluoride gels, mouth rinses, and dietary fluoride supplements. Our practice serving Teaneck, New Jersey and Flushing, Queens, and Bronx, New York is dedicated to helping prevent cavities or, should cavities appear, providing tooth colored fillings and other cosmetically pleasing and long-lasting treatments.

Orthodontics

If teeth are too crowded, dental decay may occur that could otherwise be avoided. A properly aligned bite is more likely to bring about long-lasting dental health. Even primary — or "baby" — teeth are important. These teeth help properly guide a child's permanent teeth into place for an improved facial structure and overall oral health.
