Toothache Treatment for Teaneck, New Jersey and Flushing, Queens, and Bronx, New York

If your child is experiencing a toothache, it is important to have an evaluation performed at our practice as soon as possible. Please call ahead so we can be sure to set aside the most convenient appointment time. While a toothache can have any number of causes, one common feature of all toothaches is that they can lead to more serious dental issues if not addressed quickly. At our practice with offices in Teaneck, New Jersey and Flushing, Queens, and Bronx, New York, toothache treatment begins with an analysis of the tooth pain and its cause. Dr. Jacobson and his associates will then develop a course of action to help restore your child's smile and relieve his or her pain.

If you child has a toothache, warm salt water can be used to rinse the affected area. Parents can also use dental floss or an interdental cleaner to check for food and debris between the teeth. If swelling occurs, this can be reduced by placing a cold compress on your child's face. Acetaminophen is an effective pain medication that can be used before your child's dental visit.

Broken, Fractured, or Displaced Teeth — Sports and Other Injuries

If your child loses a tooth as a result of injury, it is important to try and remain calm. Contact our office immediately and we will help you determine whether a permanent or primary tooth has been affected. If the tooth is completely removed from your child's mouth, and it is determined to be a permanent tooth, there are certain steps that can be taken to help to preserve the tooth:

  1. Gently rinse the tooth under running water, but avoid rubbing the root area
  2. Holding the tooth by the crown (as opposed to the root) try and insert the tooth back in it's socket (providing your child with a wet piece of gauze to bite on will help hold it in place)
  3. If step number two is not possible, put the tooth in a glass of milk, saline solution, or saliva, then take your child and the tooth immediately to our office or an emergency medical treatment facility

If you child's tooth is broken, but in place, there are also steps that can be taken prior to treatment:

  1. Rinse your child's mouth out with warm water, cleaning out any possible debris or foreign matter
  2. Use a cold compress on you child's cheek or gums
  3. Call our office immediately

During a dental emergency, our experienced dentist with offices in Teaneck, New Jersey and Flushing, Queens, and Bronx, New York will do everything possible to preserve or restore the tooth and relieve pain. Orthodontic Problems — Braces and Retainers

Many orthodontic devices contain wires, the sharp ends of which can cause damage to a child's cheek, tongue, or gum tissue. If a protruding wire is causing your child pain, cover the end with a cotton ball, wax, or a piece of gauze. If the wire is stuck in the cheek, tongue, or gum tissue, do not attempt to remove it. Instead, contact our office immediately. If the orthodontic appliance has broken, collect the pieces, then contact our office.
